Cucumber and Dried Shrimp Soup, Bland

Ingredients
1 cup chopped onion
1 teaspoon dried garlic chips
3/4 cup dried shrimp
3/4 teaspoon shrimp paste
3 tablespoons oil
Large pinch turmeric
4 1/2 cups water
1 tablespoon fish sauce
2 or 3 cucumbers
Methods
Soak garlic chips in 1 teaspoon water. Soak dried shrimp and chop or pound halfway to powder. Mix shrimp paste with 1/4 cup water.
Heat oil; add onion and garlic with turmeric. Lower heat. When aroma rises, put in dried shrimp. Stir at once to prevent scorching. Strain in shrimp paste liquid. Add water and sauce. Cover, raise heat, and bring to boil.
Meanwhile, peel cucumbers and cut in 3/4-inch cubes. Put into boiling soup. Cook till tender. Correct for salt.
Alternative greens for this recipe: ridged gourd, calabash gourd, squash or zucchini.
